Iannis Xenakis (1922 – 2001) a Romanian-born Greek ethnic, naturalized French composer, music theorist, and architect-engineer who worked at Le Corbusier’s studios from 1947 till 1959, is commonly recognized as one of the most important post-war avant-garde composers, designed a house on Amorgos (1966 – 1977).

The vacational house on Amorgos he designed for his daughter and their husband and composer Francois-Bernard Mache. The building complex is located on the slope of a hill, overlooking the northern coast of the Tirokomos gulf, near Lefkes. The nearest settlement stands 200 m higher: it is Aghia Thekla, typical of the traditional Cycladic nineteenth century architecture.

The House in Amorgos was considered a personal challenge for the re-invention of the design process and the redefinition of the dwelling itself. It is an architectural event. Each of the four volumes is a separate room (living room, dormitory-cum-guestroom, bedroom and bathroom), laid out at the same level on a slight curve parallel to the hill. An exterior corridor connects the rooms, while verandas and open sitting areas are fitted in between the independent volumes. The composition combines elements of traditional architecture with some basic principles of the modern movement, as well as Iannis Xenakis’s personal investigations.
With his enterprising and creative frame of mind, Xenakis achieved an absolutely personal and original piece of architecture.

Although he intended to study architecture. In 1947 although he was an illegal immigrant in Paris, Xenakis was able to get a job at Le Corbusier’s architectural studio. He worked as engineering assistant at first, but quickly rose to performing more important tasks, and eventually to collaborating with Le Corbusier on major projects. At the same time, while working for Le Corbusier, Xenakis was studying harmony and counterpoint, and composing.
In 1953 Xenakis married Françoise Xenakis, journalist and writer, whom he met in 1950. Their daughter Mâkhi, later a painter and sculptor, was born in 1956. In 1957 he received his first composition award, from the European Cultural Foundation and in 1960 Xenakis was well-known enough to receive a commission from UNESCO, for a soundtrack for a documentary film by Enrico Fulchignoni. After several years of serious illness, in early February 2001 the composer lapsed into a coma. He died in his Paris home several days later, on February 4, aged 78.

Amorgos lover Sylvia Alberti presents her Amorgos photos in a photo exhibition in Bordighera,a Italian village nestled between the Riviera and Cote D'Azur

Bordighera, is a lovely Italian sea resort nestled between the Riviera and Cote D’Azur. And…..it’s where I live!
If you happen to pass by Creperie Cafe’ Giglio, a very popular hang out in town, you will be able to spot some “Amorgos Spirit” inside the indoor cafe!!

How comes ?
Sponsored by the Photo club I belong to, I have set up a photo exhibition “Lights and colours of the Greek Islands” and most of the photos were taken when I was in my beloved Amorgos.
The sense of freedom and infinite given by those clear skies, the cobalt deep blue of the Aegean Sea, the dazzling white of villages and alleys that time has forgotten , lounging sleepy cats…. these are the real stars of my shots!
The event has been successful so far and on the guestbook many visitors have expressed their amazement for such beautiful paradise on earth….

Looking forward to coming back soon and take some of Amorgos spirit back with me through my camera and my heart…

Last week the big beachcleaning on Aegiali Beach was made with a punch of people.
The “harvested” seagrass (Posidonia Oceanica) was collected and brought to the fields as manure (clever recycling!).

Amorgos - I had no pre-conceived ideas how it may compare to the twelve Cycladic islands l'd already visited & revisited...

Amorgos – I had no pre-conceived ideas how it may compare to the twelve Cycladic islands l’d already visited & revisited. I held a vague memory some years ago on BBC radio of an English guy phoning from his home there. He described it as traditional, unspoilt & due to its location with no airport, was visited by only the most dedicated of travellers. I’d agree! It was 3am on a warm August night & the engines of the Blue Star rumbled in the peace of Astypalea harbour. As we waited to board a young tourist was keen to capture everyone’s sleep deprived smiles & comments on his i-phone! I was happy to count the million stars in the night sky where light pollution is no problem.

Aegiali early Sunday morning. A family found they were not where they expected and were afraid they’d miss their connecting ferry. The cafes were open but no buses. A lot of Euros seemed to change hands for a taxi to Katapola. What a pity that they were only passing through this magical island – in a taxi!

The mountains cast long shadows across the sandy beach but our weary bodies soon welcomed the warmth of the sun’s arrival & a refreshing dip in the clear shallow sea. Food in a taverna & exploration of the town. In the evening we took the bus through those same mountains that form the spine of this dramatic island. The sheer rocks, jagged peaks & stark greyness against the setting sun took my breath away.

We stayed in Katapola & loved the bustling activity of the harbour, which included an evening of music & dance. Although initially troubled by a failing electricity supply it was fun and uplifting for everyone. I loved the tranquility of Xilokerafidi opposite and the sheltered haven it provided on those windy days. As a painter many happy hours were spent in Chora. With an architectural delight round every corner it was difficult to decide on a subject . . . . or whether instead to linger over some tasty local food & wine, then laze in the shade like the cats!

On the road to Hosaviotissa Monastery, fear took hold as the bus was battered by the relentless wind. lt felt as though at any moment the vehicle would be whipped up,dashed against the rocks & into the sea far below! We explored the more gentle countryside in the south of the island on a scooter but again the wind gave us some scary moments on our return through the mountains. Thank goodness for my competent driver!

On Amorgos I felt at peace & able to plan for the future, so was disappointed to unexpectedly make a return trip to England. Even as the ferry was rocked by the high sea & the island was soon lost from view, I was planning my return – within 10 days.

Its now 6 months & 10 days & I long for spring in Amorgos. Flowers in the mountains, warm sun, more feline friends, new places to explore & paint. Oh . . and I expect the wind will carry me there!

Elemental walking is more than just another theory about walking. It is an understanding of human movement.

Of course, walking is easy. It’s so easy that no child has to be taught how to. It’s so easy, that we never think about it. Unless it gets difficult. Sometimes difficulties are caused by fatigue and often by pain. Ones knee bothers and another one moans about back pain. Nobody complains about a painful gait. People still think they have got this walking thing off pat.

Reconnect with your natural abilities to walk, even before it hurts. Learning to move with less effort makes daily life easier and also can enhance sport and the standard of your exercise performance.
Elemental walking courses help people to exploit their own individual movement which involves thinking, sensing, moving, and imagining. Most of the course segments are based on developmental movements and everyday functional activities. There are also expanded upon to include and develop further abstract explorations to discover functional relationships between different body parts.

Amorgos provides the perfect ambiance to explore elemental walking. Barefoot experiences on the sandy beaches. Balancing on pebbles and rocks. Gentle hikes with stunning views. Inhaling herbal scents. Here you can discover your individual way of elemental walking which appeals to all your distinct senses.

DanceHaus Susanna Beltrami and its Summer Residence of Arts and Dance will host the first International Campus for young artists and performers on Amorgos (from 10.06 to 18.06 2013).

Each day you will experience a wide range of activities from the dance-energy-breath on the seashore up to the Atelier of contemporary dance and physical theater hold by the italian Choreographer Susanna Beltrami in an exclusive location with one of the most evocative views on the Island: the Aegialis bay.

Susanna Beltrami

The program also includes in-depth meetings on the ritual and creative course at the base of performance, masters focusing on the knowledge of the fisical and artistical morphology of the Isle, seminaries of greek kitchen, herbal medicine, and creation and interpretation of mandala. And for the lovers of wellness, the Aegialis Hotel &Spa provides a beautiful swimming pool with salted water, a gymnasium and a wellness oasis where to relax and regenerate.

This is a 360 degree experiencial training ment to merge with the most significant sites of the Island: such as the historical-rural site of Asfondilitis or the white and singular building of the Monastery of Hosoviotissa, the monastery of the steps. They all are reachable through long paths treaded among the little trees of oregano, sage and thyme that spread all around their heady perfumes.

The body of the artist in the center, always. The body that listens to its own breathe, the body that creates, the body that regenerates in liason to the profound bleu of the Egean Sea and the warm stones of the Island of Amorgos.

Seven days to have a glimpse of the Beauty, seven days to plunge in the land of the myth with your body and your soul, starting at the dawn from the sea, primeval fount of life, ending at the mountains at night. Seven days to explore the place where to give birth to your own artistical creation.
